The current recommendation – from medical authorities such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, UK Department of Health, World Health Organization and UNICEF – is to wait until 6 months of age before introducing solids.

This is because breastmilk or formula usually meet baby’s nutritional needs for the first 6 months of life.

Some pediatricians, however, recommend that babies start solids at 4 months of age.

Your baby will give you clear signs when he’s ready to move beyond liquid-only nourishment. Cues to look for include:

Can hold her head up. Your baby needs to be able to maintain a steady, upright position, to take her first foods.
Sits well when supported. You may have to have your baby on your lap at first. A highchair can be pulled into action a bit later when she can sit up by herself.
Makes chewing motions. Your baby should be able to move food to the back of her mouth and swallow. As your baby learns to swallow efficiently you may notice that she dribbles less. She may even have a tooth or two.
Has gained a healthy weight. Most babies are ready to eat semi-solids when they’ve doubled their birth weight. This may happen before or around their sixth month.

Where should you feed your baby?

You’ll want a sturdy, stable, comfy place for him to sit, at a convenient height for you. To start out, that might be a bouncy seat or even a car seat. (Just make sure that he’s upright enough to swallow well.) Once he can sit up by himself, though, a highchair at the table is your best bet. Your baby will be able to participate in family meals, and you’ll be able to eat your own meal and feed him at the same time. It’ll also be easier to clean up after he chows down.

Try scrambling up a couple of eggs for breakfast, tossing a hard-boiled egg or two on your lunchtime salad, or having an omelet and salad for dinner. As part of your diet, you might even opt for DHA-fortified eggs to increase the level of this essential fatty acid in your milk.

Whole-Wheat Bread

Folic acid is crucial to your baby’s development in the early stages of pregnancy. But its importance doesn’t end there. Folic acid is an important nutrient in your breast milk that your baby needs for good health. And it’s crucial you eat enough for your own well-being, too. Enriched whole-grain breads and pastas are fortified with this vital nutrient. They also give you a healthy dose of fiber and iron.

Leafy Greens

The list of benefits you get from eating leafy green vegetables such as spinach, Swiss chard, and broccoli goes on and on. They’re filled with vitamin A, which your baby needs to get from your breast milk. They’re a non-dairy source of dietary calcium. They’ve got vitamin C and iron. You can vary your options and meet some of your fluid requirements by drinking juice and milk, but be careful when it comes to caffeinated drinks like coffee or tea. Keep your intake to no more than 2-3 cups a day or switch to decaffeinated varieties. That’s because caffeine enters your breast milk and can cause your baby to become irritable and sleep poorly.

Choose energy bars carefully

An energy bar can be helpful as an occasional way to sustain yourself between meals, especially when you’re away from home and in need of quick fix. But be cautious about reaching for an energy bar regularly, says Hattner, as they’re often surprisingly high in calories and sugar. Check the label to make sure the energy bars you choose are low in sugar and fat and high in fiber, protein, and carbohydrates.
Food can only do so much

Finally, know that even the most energy-packed food can’t counteract the sleep deprivation you’re experiencing right now. If possible, take a quick nap the next time you’re feeling weary, rather than turning to food. “We tend to eat, thinking that will give us energy,” Hattner says. “It may just be that you need a nap.”

But as all-consuming as caring for an infant can be, it’s important to take care of yourself too. Choosing healthy foods — and following a few simple eating strategies — will help keep you energized through your busy days and nights.

Start with a balanced diet. If you need guidance, the USDA’s My Pyramid Plan offers a customized daily food plan based on your age, gender, and activity level. Drink plenty of water, and try to make time to sit down and eat a quick snack or meal — even if you have to put the baby down or hand her off to your partner or a helper for a few minutes. Don’t be afraid to ask friends, neighbors, and relatives for help with grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning up.

Salmon

There’s no such thing as a perfect food. But salmon is pretty close when it comes to a nutritional powerhouse for new moms. One of the best breastfeeding foods out there, salmon, like other fatty fish, is loaded with a type of fat called DHA. DHA is crucial to the development of your baby’s nervous system. All breast milk contains DHA, but levels of this essential nutrient are higher in the milk of women who get more DHA from their diets.

The DHA in salmon may also help your mood. Studies suggest it may play a role in preventing postpartum depression.

Low-Fat Dairy Products

Whether you prefer yogurt, milk, or cheese, dairy products are an important part of healthy breastfeeding. In addition to providing protein, B vitamins, and vitamin D, dairy products are one of the best sources of calcium. If you’re breastfeeding, your milk is loaded with calcium to help your baby’s bones develop, so it’s important for you to eat enough calcium to meet your own needs. Lean Beef

Using a food processor, grind the brown rice into a powder.
Then, peel the peach, remove the pit and cut the flesh into little cubes.
Bring the water to the boil in a small saucepan.
Stir in the rice powder, lower the heat and continue to stir.
Add the peach cubes, then – stirring often – simmer gently for 10 mins.
If the texture is too thick for your baby at the end of the cooking time, thin it with a little breast milk or formula. Breakfast is ready!

Why is brown rice better for baby than white?

A grain of rice is composed of several different layers. Only the outside layer, the ‘hull’, is removed during the production of brown rice and very little goodness is lost by the grain in the process.

But during the production of white rice, the grains are milled to remove more layers – the bran and almost all of the germ. This process strips the grains of the majority of their nutrients.

In the final part of the process, another layer called ‘aleurone’ is removed and the grains are polished. But aleurone is a good source of essential fats, which play such an important role in your baby’s diet.

So what are you left with?

White rice – a refined starch that offers your little one very little in the way of nutrition.

Why is brown rice such a healthy choice for baby?

Just look at what it contains!

• vitamins B1, B3 and B6
• manganese (essential for healthy bones, manganese also reduces the symptoms of asthma and is a powerful, energy-providing antioxidant)
• iron
• phosphorus
• selenium
• Essential Fatty Acids
• fibre

Other important benefits gained from eating brown rice include a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and lower levels of cholesterol.

Yet a very large percentage of these valuable nutrients are lost during the production of white rice.

By law, white rice in some countries must be ‘enriched’ and certain nutrients must be added back in. So it should be just as good for you as brown rice, right?

Wrong – because the nutrients are not in their original form, they are far less beneficial to health. In fact, enriched white rice is STILL lacking 11 valuable nutrients that are NEVER replaced (see The World’s Healthiest Foods for more information).

Brown rice is full of flavour

Some people say that brown rice does not taste as good as white. But these people have often grown up ONLY eating white rice, which actually has very little flavour (unsurprising, when you consider how much is removed from the grain to produce it!). Brown rice does taste VERY different to white! Its flavour is almost nutty and – conversely – people who regularly eat brown rice find white rice very bland and unappetizing.

That’s why it’s a good idea to get your baby accustomed to the full flavour of nutritious brown rice from an early age – you’ll probably find that he turns his nose up at starchy old white rice in the future!

Storing brown rice

Uncooked rice

Carefully check the ‘best by’ date on any packets of brown rice that you buy for your family.

Once you get it home, store it in the refrigerator. This is because, unlike white rice, the oily germ of brown rice is intact. There is the possibility that this could turn rancid if the rice is not stored at a sufficiently cool temperature.

Cooked rice

You have to be very careful when storing cooked rice, as bacteria can multiply very quickly. Many sources say that you can store it for up to 4 days in the refrigerator – but we prefer to err on the side of caution and suggest that you only cook rice for your baby on the day that you plan to serve it to him… and throw any leftovers away!

Alternatively, you can make up a batch of brown rice and freeze it. Because the bacteria in rice multiply so rapidly, it is important to cool cooked rice very quickly if you plan to freeze it. The best way to do this is to spread it out in a shallow container – but never leave rice sitting for more than one hour at room temperature. Once the rice has cooled, freeze it in individual freezer bags, so you have handy portions available for your baby’s next meal. You can store frozen rice for up to 6 months.

Is brown rice safe for babies?

But studies have revealed that traces of arsenic may be present in non-organic brown rice. Although these traces are too small to cause serious short term illness, in the long term they can have negative effects on the body.

You should, therefore, only offer organically grown brown rice to your baby.

Cooking brown rice for your baby

The easiest way to prepare brown rice for very young babies is to first rinse it, then grind it in a food processor that’s built for the job! The Cuisinart Mini-Prep® Processor (US only) is ideal and is great for making purees, too!

Here’s a simple recipe for baby cereal that you can try.

If your baby is older, try using short grain brown rice in dishes that you cook for him. Because it’s fairly soft, it sticks together in ‘clumps’ and is perfect for creamy dishes like rice pudding.

Brown rice takes longer to cook than white rice…

Around twice as long, in fact. But you can get around this by measuring out the amount of water you will need to cook it, then soaking it overnight – it really speeds up the cooking time! Remember… don’t drain the water you soaked it in, use it to cook the rice instead. This means you don’t lose any of its precious nutrients.

Ideas for your baby using brown rice

Brown rice can easily be substituted for white in any recipe calling for rice – but do bear in mind that it will take longer to cook unless you have pre-soaked it. Here are some other suggestions…

• Combine cooked brown rice with warm breast milk or formula, then add a little touch of cinnamon or nutmeg.
• Mix cooked brown rice (either ground or regular) with a dollop of unflavoured natural yogurt and a fruit puree of your baby’s choice!
• Combine cooked brown rice with steamed vegetables – you can either puree them before mixing, or just chop them if your little one is happy to chew!
• Cook brown rice for your baby in homemade chicken, beef or vegetable stock/broth for a rich, interesting flavour.
• Cook a little batch of short grain brown rice, clump it together with your fingers and serve it to your baby as a very healthy finger food.

Wholesome Rice Cereal

2 oz brown rice powder
8 fl oz water
a little formula/breastmilk

To make the rice powder, grind brown rice in a blender or food processor. This is best achieved by grinding in small quantities – but to make the powder REALLY fine, we recommend trying a Coffee/Spice Grinder.

You can use white rice if you prefer, but this page explains why brown rice is more nutritious.

Bring the water to a boil.

Add the rice powder, stirring constantly with a wire whisk.

Simmer for about 10 minutes (don’t forget to keep stirring, or the rice will stick).

Then stir in enough formula or breastmilk to give the consistency that’s best for your baby.

Once baby has been introduced to fruit, you could always add a little of his favourite puree.

Attitudes-Based Learning (or ABL, for short) is a program initiated in the year 2000 to inculcate positive attitudes and characters in children and teens in Singapore.

During that period of time, there were many incidents around the world that deserved our utmost attention. The rise of terrorism around the world was televised around the world and the increasing number of children and teens suffering due to drugs, physical and sexual abuse was alarming. The increase in school-related violence and incidents were reported widely, from America to Japan. Not to mention, several incidents involving teens going on a school killing spree in America.

One of the most bizarre incidents involved a seven-year-old boy who pulled out a gun and shot dead a girl in class (in front of his Grade 1 teacher and classmates near Flint, Michigan). Associated Press, Mar 1, 2000

With so much violence and terror in our world involving children (directly or indirectly), there was a pressing need to encourage more character building education in our societies, to bring forth positive attitudes and moral values for our young.

Hence, the development of the program, Attitudes-Based Learning (ABL) was given birth in Singapore to play a positive role in remedying the ills of our society.

In its infancy, ABL was perceived as a credible cornerstone to foster a conscious character building education in Singapore schools. But unfortunately, there was not much done to push the idea forward due to lack of interest and financial backing in year 2000. Though for a brief period, ABL made its print debut in the first Asia’s children’s creative thinking magazine, ONE, in Singapore and Malaysia through stories that emphasized positive attitudes like kindness, determination and how one can make a difference in people’s lives.

It was only until the year 2003 that ABL was resuscitated into its full glory and intentions. With encouragement and involvement of like-minded individuals who were fervent to build a mentally and emotionally stronger Singapore, ABL was re-engineered to serve as a holistic attitudes- transformation education program for all (though emphasis is still on young children and teens).

In the year 2003, the new and improved Attitudes-Based Learning program is not just another character building program. ABL was further dissected and analyzed by a small team of researchers. With added refinements to the teaching philosophy and methodology, ABL program became more adaptive and holistic. This has greatly increased the effectiveness of achieving the mission and the desired outcomes of the ABL program.

It was also realized that ABL should cater for pre-schoolers, as there was insufficient providers of character building education programs for this particular age group in Singapore and Asia. With ABL being a program that infuses the dimension of self-reflection to build better self-esteem and awareness, we were confident that through interesting and thought-provoking activities (based on Harvard’s Professor Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences concept), ABL would be immensely successful in encouraging positive attitudes amongst our pre-schoolers.

So, how is ABL unique from other character building education programs available?

• ABL adopts a 7-steps framework, which ensure that each child is correctly exposed, explained and experienced to the right attitude
• ABL emphasis is on self-discovery rather than forced inculcation
• ABL uses 4 easy-to-remember animal characters to help each child relate a specially devised set of values and attitudes.

The process of nurturing positive attitudes in your students using Attitudes-Based Learning program is not complex. They are simple but effective steps to ensure that your students will slowly but steadily transform the way they behave and feel about themselves. More importantly, family and friends will notice the difference in them in the most positive manner if done right.

The 7-Steps of the Attitudes-Based Learning Process developed by Dr. Alvin Chan

There is a sequence of 7-steps that you need to follow in order for ABL to be effective in achieving your desired outcomes.

1. EXPLANATION AND UNDERSTANDING

1. Explain the attitude to be taught to your charges
2. Increase their understanding by giving a few examples about the attitude. Better still, tell a story with the related attitude to be taught and discuss with them
3. Ask them whether they have experiences about the attitude taught to check on their understanding.

2. SHARING EXPERIENCES

1. Get them to share their experiences about the attitude and the related positive behavior

3. SITUATIONS and REFLECTIONS

1. Give them a few situations whereby such attitude can be applied in their lives
2. Ask them what they will do in this variety of situations
3. Get them to reflect upon their actions-are they appropriate or not?
4. Share your thoughts with them about their actions
5. Tell them what you think is the more appropriate action for each situation
6. Ask them to reflect on what you have told them-do they agree with you?

4. ROLE-PLAY

1. Create an environment for them to role-play the few situations that are being discussed.
2. Ask them to point out whether the ‘actors’ have acted in an appropriate manner.

5. ACTIVITY (TO REMIND AND REINFORCE THE LEARNING)

1. Give them an activity (could be listening to a story, drawing or singing a song) to reinforce what they have learnt about the attitude. This is to help them remember better the attitude learnt in class.
2. Encourage them to ‘practice’ what they have learnt in class by giving specific situations and appropriate actions they can do in their home, with their family and friends.

6. ACCOUNTABILITY

1. Get them to be accountable for practicing what they have learnt by providing them a checklist of positive actions (usually using pictures to show) for them to remind themselves (or even for their parents to sign the checklist)
2. After a few days, ask them whether they have practiced the positive actions based on the checklist that were given in class.

7. EVALUATION

1. Teacher must periodically keep track that students continue to practice the positive actions taught to ensure internalization of attitudes.
2. The checklist also acts as a measurement to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning process.

Loris Malaguzzi (1920-1994) founded the ‘Reggio Emilia’ approach at a city in northern Italy called Reggio Emilia. The ‘Reggio’ approach was developed for municipal child-care and education programs serving children below six. The approach requires children to be seen as competent, resourceful, curious, imaginative, inventive and possess a desire to interact and communicate with others.

The ‘Reggio’ vision of the child as a competent learner has produced a strong child-directed curriculum model. The curriculum has purposive progression but not scope and sequence. Teachers follow the children’s interests and do not provide focused instruction in reading and writing. Reggio approach has a strong belief that children learn through interaction with others, including parents, staff and peers in a friendly learning environment.

The role of the environment-as-teacher

• Within the Reggio Emilia schools, the educators are very concerned about what their school environments teach children. Hence, a great attention is given to the look and feel of the classroom. It is often referring to the environment as the “third teacher”
• The aesthetic beauty within the schools is seen as an important part of respecting the child and their learning environment
• A classroom atmosphere of playfulness and joy pervades
• Teachers organize environments rich in possibilities and provocations that invite the children to undertake extended exploration and problem solving, often in small groups, where cooperation and disputation mingle pleasurably.
• Documentation of children’s work, plants, and collections that children have made from former outings are displayed both at the children’s and adult eye level.

Documentation as assessment and advocacy

• Documenting and displaying the children’s project work, which is necessary for children to express, revisit, and construct and reconstruct their feelings, ideas and understandings.
• Similar to the portfolio approach, documentation of children’s work in progress is viewed as an important tool in the learning process for children, teachers, and parents.
• Pictures of children engaged in experiences, their words as they discuss what they are doing, feeling and thinking, and the children’s interpretation of experience through the visual media are displayed as a graphic presentation of the dynamics of learning.
• Teachers act as recorders (documenters) for the children, helping them trace and revisit their words and actions and thereby making the learning visible.

Long-term projects

• Supporting and enriching children’s learning through in-depth, short-term (one week) and long-term (throughout the school year) project work, in which responding, recording, playing, exploring, hypothesis building and testing, and provoking occurs.
• Projects are child-centered, following their interest, returning again and again to add new insights.
• Throughout a project, teachers help children make decisions about the direction of study, the ways in which the group will research the topic, the representational medium that will demonstrate and showcase the topic.

The teacher as researcher

• The teacher’s role within the Reggio Emilia approach is complex. Working as co-teachers, the role of the teacher is first and foremost to be that of a learner alongside the children. The teacher is a teacher-researcher, a resource and guide as she/he lends expertise to children.
• Within such a teacher-researcher role, educators carefully listen, observe, and document children’s work and the growth of community in their classroom and are to provoke and stimulate thinking
• Teachers are committed to reflection about their own teaching and learning.
• Classroom teachers working in pairs and collaboration, sharing information and mentoring between personnel.

Home-school relationships

• Children, teachers, parents and community are interactive and work together. Building a community of inquiry between adults and children.
• For communication and interaction can deepen children’s inquiry and theory building about the world around them
• Programs in Reggio are family centered. Loris’s vision of an “education based on relationships” focuses on each child in relation to others and seeks to activate and support children’s reciprocal relationships with other children, family, teachers, society, and the environment.

Reggio approach is not a formal model with defined methods (such as Waldorf and Montessori), teacher certification standards and accreditation processes. But rather, the educators in Reggio Emilia speak of their evolving “experience” and see themselves as a provocation and reference point, a way of engaging in dialogue starting from a strong and rich vision of the child. In all of these settings, documentation was explored as a means of promoting parent and teacher understanding of children’s learning and development.

While this article concentrate on Reggio Emilia approach on early childhood education, it did not play down on the other approaches such as Waldorf and Montessori. Each approach has its own strengths and weaknesses as well as areas of difference.
